PALM SPRINGS, Calif - Palm Springs debuts its first senior assisted living village for the LGBT community this weekend.

Stonewall Gardens, located on Palm Canyon in North Palm Springs, is holding an open house Saturday and Sunday.

Potential residents can come tour the community's apartments grounds and public areas.

What was once a 1950s bungalow style resort in north Palm Springs, in its last reincarnation called the Desert Moon, has become Stonewall Gardens in Palm Springs - the first assisted-living village for gay seniors in Southern California.

Construction over the summer and early fall has unveiled a midcentury modern design, desert landscaping, water features and complete access from rooms to the communal dining area with executive chef prepared meals, outdoor patio setup, and there are even plans for a small stage for entertainment activities.

Thumbs up: Comfortable home for LGBT seniors
Stonewall Gardens, the first assisted-living complex for the senior LGBT community in the Coachella Valley, will help accommodate a growing demand here.

The owners have transformed the Desert Moon Resort and Spa on North Palm Canyon Drive into a home for up to 30 residents. They have removed the pool to create a shaded outdoor living space where residents can interact and share in activities. It's not meant to be a place where tenants hide away in their rooms.
